Here is a short piece I wrote a couple months back for the City Weekly, but it was quickly orphaned and never made print. For those interested in the Utah art scene (yes, believe it or not, there is one!), 15 Bytes is the premiere source.
"Do you ever find yourself coming home from Gallery Stroll or finishing the latest City Weekly arts coverage, but still craving more aesthetic and creative goodness? Then look no further than the smart and lively 15 Bytes. It is a local hidden gem of a magazine dedicated solely to art, artists, galleries, and more.
"Started back in 2001 by upcoming artist and editor-in-chief Shawn Rossiter, the publication has become a vital outlet for Utah art and artists. Rossiter began the publication because, 'I wanted to find a way to bring the disparate elements of the visual arts community together to have a conversation. A serious conversation.'
"15 Bytes is always engaged with the local art scene, but also takes time to explore the past. As Rossiter explains, 'The only demographic we have is 'people interested in art, so on one page we might have a review of a cutting edge contemporary exhibit and on the next a historical essay on an early pioneer painter.' Rossiter and his team of writers are creating an important and enjoyable conversation with in-depth interviews, reviews, essays, and more.
"Online, free, and published every month, will the magazine ever go print? Not likely anytime soon. Rossiter says he likes the flexibility that an online format allows, 'the length of our articles is restricted only by our audience's attention span.' Along with the monthly magazine format, 15 Bytes also offers a stimulating blog with au courant coverage, along with video and audio content that will be expanding during the course of 2009."
