I love your last sentence...that sums up Davies's appeal to me, for sure. Realism it isn't! I'll be interested to see what you think of What's Bred in the Bone...my favorite of all his books, and in some ways a revision of The Manticore (which was not an entirely successful experiment).

Thanks! I look forward to What's Bread in the Bone some day. I have a paperback of it that I've lugged around for almost 20 years after reading The Rebel Angels.
